Nothing Happens To You But For You…

Writer: Margaret O'DonnellMargaret O'Donnell

I often say this in my book, and my followers have wondered exactly what I mean. It’s hard to put meaning to this, but it’s actually a feeling for me—a strong sense.

Although none of us wishes anything uncomfortable or devastating to happen, we will all experience loss in some way…a tricky subject. Still, if we sit through it and respond in a way that moves us through grace and loosens control, we get through it. We might grow from it, learn from it, meet someone we never expected to meet from it, or travel somewhere we would never have been. We may look at sunsets with gratitude and appreciate the life around us. Our hearts might be open to new experiences and people. We may accept our differences with others and learn to know we are all the same walking this life path. Our faith might deepen as we know we are never truly alone.

My growth has been that I have found strength I never thought I had. I found confidence, and I found calmness. I no longer panic, I no longer overthink situations, and I no longer worry as much. I stay present each day as it unfolds precisely how it should. I fill my day with gratitude. I get to walk, I get to do yoga, I get to do the chores I hate doing, I get to make a phone call to a friend, I get to do life, and it’s a gift!

Some may question this; some may say yay, right!!! But this is what I mean when nothing happens to you; it happens for you. Not that we wish any trauma to happen, but how we respond to this, how we move through it and loosen control of the outcome, is how we get through it!!! How it shifts us, moves us, and allows us to grow and move forward.

I cannot begin to tell you. I have had my days of such grief. I still have days where I may question, and then the fear rises, but I come back to the moment and come back to the day.

I know all is good at the moment I am in; if it’s not, it will pass if I loosen control.

I hope I have answered this question for my readers. I hope you find the strength you need.

Peace my Friends
