What You Need To Know…

Writer: Margaret O'DonnellMargaret O'Donnell

This is a hard topic to address. It brings up so much emotion and vulnerability but we all need to face this and the better prepared you are the stronger you will move through a life changing event such as mine.

When my husband was taken I froze and had to now take care of our life. Not only medical decisions but all household tasks which he once took full control of. I am giving you this time to get this done so you are prepared. You write it all down then tuck it away. You have this discussion with your partner. It's a tough one….

What do I do if something happens to you???

  1. Get your power of attorney, wills and health care proxy UP-TO-DATE;

  2. Find out all passcodes to banking, credit cards utility bills;

  3. Get names and numbers of contacts, lawyers, financial people, accountants call these people NOW and get to know them personally;

  4. Find out all your insurance policies read them and review them with your agent…make sure you fully understand each policy;

  5. Assign a person NOT YOUR KIDS to help you with everything. This person will get you organized and help you as you handle medical issues;

  6. Know the medical history of your partner;

  7. Understand how all your bills are being paid and where to find documents;

  8. Know how to do your taxes and what you need; and

  9. Understand loans you have and payment.

By knowing all this in advance you will not find yourself alone and scared as everything will be familiar to you. Be prepared.

Write it all down and put it away safely and tell your contact person where it is.

So now close your eyes, take a long deep breath and know all is well in this moment.

Peace
